Paulina García and Paula Zúñiga embody the struggle between women and the role of gender in today’s society.

Un montón de brujas volando por el cielo tells the story of two women battling it out to run the fan club of a television presenter who has passed away. As a result, both women reveal what pains them and leaves them empty, the result of a patriarchal system that constantly punishes women who don’t follow the rules and don’t play the socially accepted female role. All this leads them to confronting and judging each other, without them really getting to know each other, forgetting the sad fact that all women are in the same violent and vulnerable situation.

This is the fifth production by Teatro del Antagonista, following on from Silencio (2012), El malentendido (2016), Yo también quiero ser un hombre blanco heterosexual (2018) and Bell Cross (2019).

Heading up a powerful creative project

This actor trained at Fernando Cuadra’s Teatro La Casa and graduated in esthetics and philosophy from the Catholic University. He has studied choreography and contemporary dance and, as an actor, has worked on productions directed by Aldo Droguett. In 2011, he dabbled in cinema with the film La canción sin letra and, in 2012, he directed the play Silencio, premiered at the UDLA Theater, as well as Coloquios, written by and starring Fernando Cuadra. That same year, he co-directed the monologue starring Alejandro Sieveking called Ojos azules opacos. He’s taught acting, movement and design at the Teatro La Casa Professional Institute and at the Universidad de las Américas, as well as at other places. He’s been a member of the Teatro de la Palabra theater project, directed by Víctor Carrasco and technical producer of the plays La amante fascista written by Alejandro Moreno and Clase by Guillermo Calderón. In 2016, he carried out a study into classical texts, leading to the creation of the play El malentendido at Matucana 100. In 2018, he directed Yo también quiero ser un hombre blanco heterosexual and, in 2019, the dance piece Bell Cross. As well as directing Un montón de brujas… and Constelaciones familiares - both written by Carla Zúñiga – nowadays he also runs his own research and theatrical training center called Teatro Escuela.

Emphasizing visuals and sound

This company was created in 2011 by graduates from Teatro La Casa and the University of Chile. That same year, they premiered Silencio, written by Aldo Droguett, at the Universidad de las Américas Theater. Among the plays they’ve premiered, Ojos azules opacos - written by Fernando Cuadra and starring Alejandro Sieveking - particularly stands out. In 2013, the company decided to concentrate on the topics that emerged from the study of Manuel Morgado, their director and Gonzalo Hurtado, sound designer. These involved the suggestive power of classical and contemporary texts, the evocative capacity of space and theater in which sound and images are significant parts of the experience. As a result, they premiered El malentendido by Albert Camus at M100 in May 2016. In 2018, they premiered Yo también quiero ser un hombre blanco heterosexual and, in 2019, the dance piece Bell Cross.

–Written by Carla Zúñiga, it tackles two issues that are extremely topical in Chile right now: the construction of feminism and gender violence. The concept of a ‘contemporary witch’ is developed in the play, as well as how, from different angles, “women have been herded into a wrong and evil place and the patriarchal order that governs our society built up from there”, the company explains.

–It stars two theater heavyweights: actresses Paulina García (La familia, which will also be performed at Santiago a Mil) and Paula Zúñiga (Neva, Hilda Peña).

Contemporary witch: Feminist Mona Chollet suggests that before being demonized, witches were in charge of healing the sick and helping women give birth or have abortions. As the only people townsfolk could turn to, they challenged the fledgling expansion of capitalism in the sixteenth century. “By unmercifully repressing certain behavior that from then on was considered unacceptable, witch hunts helped model today’s world”, observes Cholett. In her book Witches (The Irrepressible Power of Women), she looks into both old and current witch hunts. The targets of these are female dissidents who consider that males are not the be all and end all, who don’t play a typical role in their families or are senior citizens who exercise their freedom. She also looks into how, from the twentieth century to the present day, these witch hunts have turned into political movements. She mentions Matilda Joslyn Gage (1826-1898), the first feminist in the United States to delve into the history of witches, as well as the case of the Women´s International Terrorist Conspiracy for Hell (WITCH) organization that, at the end of the seventies, defended the historical figure of the witch through public interventions.
