Prestigious doctor Melina Melinao comes up with an invention that promises to change history: a traductometer to find out what animals say, feel and suffer.

El increíble traductómetro de la Dra. Melina Melinao is a play for all the family that uses Zoom to the max to tell a simple visual story, directed by Los Contadores Auditores. This duo of theater designers - made up of Juan Andrés Rivera and Felipe Olivares - wrote and directed this production to stimulate children in these times of confinement, using a story with different animals. The play uses small sets and puppets created by an outstanding group of designers, which are operated live by actors from their homes to make the dream of being able to understand animals a reality.

After many failed attempts, renowned researcher Melina Melinao manages to finish her traductometer, a device that makes it possible to understand the language of animals. Together with her cat, Anticucho, Melina helps solve the problems of a parrot, a street dog, a piglet and a disruptive old mare, as well as talking to many other animals. These interactions lead her to discover a terrible case of animal cruelty and also to understand that sometimes just listening is enough to solve disagreements and problems.

At the end of each show, there’s a chance for the children to interact using material that can be downloaded and printed out.

Little monsters

This artistic duo is made up of Felipe Olivares and Juan Andrés Rivera, theater designers from the University of Chile. Together, they’ve developed their own theater project as directors and playwrights, premiering more than ten productions over the group’s 12 year existence. They’re particularly interested in pop theater and culture for the masses. As designers, they’ve taken part in numerous theater projects with outstanding directors and companies - such as Bonobo and La Mala Clase - and they’ve also made incursions into curating artistic exhibitions like Monstruos menores, developed with theater designer Rocío Hernández.

-Its story and target audience of children make it one of the most interesting pieces of theater to have been created during confinement. Critics have particularly highlighted its appealing staging, which involves actors, puppets and illustrations, all transmitted via ZOOM.

-It’s not only an entertaining show but also has an important message to convey about looking after and respecting animals. Thanks to the traductometer, the audience has the chance to understand what they feel and suffer. The teaching activities the play’s team have created are a bonus and are given a special role after the function.

-It’s got all the hallmarks of Los Contadores Auditores, one of the most innovative, daring and creative companies in Chilean theater, which has come back to family-orientated theater after its acclaimed piece La guerra de las matemáticas.

Puppet theater: In the book Aproximación al teatro de títeres by Argentine puppeteer Juan Enrique Acuña, this genre is defined as ‘a group of artistic disciplines and techniques through which a specific kind of show is created, performed and organized, characterized by the use of certain expressive material elements’. Four different basic techniques are usually mentioned: stick, glove, shadow and either mobile or string puppets. All these forms have been improved upon by technological advances and experimentation. For example, there are now digital puppets and puppets with complex mechanisms that require several puppeteers.
