Confinement told through a remix of six people’s voices: their testimonies, experiences and opinions during lockdown.


Bitácora Sonora is a sound archive project with six voices that, over the course of three months, talk about what happens to them as they endure an obligatory lockdown. It’s not a place for pundits, nor does it aim to give anyone a say in what’s going on. It’s simply a chance for them to express themselves freely and get things off their chest, with the voices expressing their logical thoughts - or the complete opposite. Bitácora sonora invites the audience to listen to and interact with the voices, more because of what they sound like than what they’re actually saying.

The sound of theater

This actor and teacher studied theater acting at the University of Chile and is a performing arts graduate from the Universidad Mayor. Since 2006, he’s been working as an artistic educator, teaching different courses at different academic institutions. He’s designed the sound and/or composed the music for more than 90 Chilean productions since 2001, working with directors such as Manuela Infante, Aliocha de la Sotta, Ana Harcha, Paula Aros, Paly García and Juan Peragallo. As an actor, his collaborations with the Teatro de Chile company in their productions of Cristo and Multicancha, directed by Manuela Infante, particularly stand out. As a musician, he’s been involved in the musical project Alamedas, has worked with Fernando Milagros, and he’s currently a member of the band Bahía Inútil. He’s been a musical assistant for the scores composed by theater designer and régie Pablo Núñez - Carmen (2005), Thäis (2010) and La Traviata (2016). Since 2009 when he started directing, he’s been developing theatrical methodologies based on sound and musical mechanisms in pieces such as Osama (2009), Everest (2012), El lugar común (2014) and Escuadrón Remix (2015). He’s also cemented his most important creative partnership with artist Trinidad Piriz, which has led to the creation of Helen Brown (2012), Teatronacional (2013), Ithaca (2015), Fin (2017) and Coro (2019), as well as the training seminar El sonido y el adentro for both professionals and amateurs, held in Chile and abroad.

The project

The brainchild of artist Daniel Marabolí, this artistic project uses mixes and remixes of sounds and music to explore and experiment with different theatrical and sound creation formats. This time, with Javier Pañella and Sergio Gilabert, he’s created a high-spirited piece of pop research that plays with the sound and documentary archives of the different voices taking part in the project.

—In just two minutes, you can listen to the testimonies of anonymous people answering simple questions about their go-to dish in quarantine, who they’re missing or how they’re keeping calm, all bundled together without commentaries or intermediaries. These are pop-style testimonies in strange times.

—At a time when everyone has an opinion about everything, when you hear snippets of daily dramas like losing your mask or feeling like you’re infecting people even though you’re not and when there are people that miss the nineties and giving hugs, this is perhaps a much more accurate portrayal of the pandemic that many other cultural attempts to do so.

Remix: This is a format that has been altered or remastered from its original state by adding, eliminating or changing parts of it. A song, a work of art, a book, a video, a poem or a photograph can be remixed. The only common trait of a remix is that it appropriates and changes other materials to create something new. Writer Kirby Ferguson suggested a theory of cultural remixing in his documentary series Everything is a remix, referencing everything from Quentín Tarantino’s movies to the work of William Burroughs.
