In this elaborate puppet show, Viajeinmóvil brings Shakespeare’s famous tragedy back to life.

Desdemona and Othello, Emilia and Iago. These two couples are the only stars of Jaime Lorca and Viajeinmóvil’s version of Otelo, el moro de Venecia, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s play brought to life by puppets, with an actor and actress playing the main characters. The play is the result of Lorca’s desire to reflect on violence against women and his conviction that material theater is the ideal basis for tackling this problem. “The real issue in Othello is femicide, not jealousy, To believe the contrary is to make light of the play, reducing it to a tragicomedy of goodies versus baddies. Desdemona’s murder cannot be smoothed over by elevating the crime to something romantic”, says its director.

Adapted and directed by: Teresita Iacobelli, Christián Ortega, Jaime Lorca | Actors: Nicole Espinoza and Jaime Lorca | Music: Juan Salinas | Wardrobe: Loreto Monsalve |Artistic consultant: Eduardo Jiménez | Lighting: Héctor Velásquez | Sound: Franco Peñaloza

“Effectively combining visual and object theater with actors, puppeteering with ventriloquism and the art of comedy with

commedia dell’arte, this version of Otelo doesn’t let up and leaves the audience wanting more”.
