By Teatro La Provincia
A heart-rending production that is both raw and profound, depicting the psychological and social consequences of abuse.
La ciudad de la fruta exposes the confrontation between an grown woman and the men who abused her during her infancy. Directed by Rodrigo Pérez and with performances from Catalina Saavedra, Marcela Millie, Francisco Ossa, Jaime Leiva, Marco Rebolledo and Guillermo Ugalde, this production recreates scenes from the author - playwright Leyla Selman’s - family life that have been brushed under the carpet, in an attempt to draw a parallel to Chile’s darkest times during the military dictatorship. In Selman’s own words, “La ciudad de la fruta is my chance to reconstruct the facts of my childhood and get the kind of closure I haven’t been able to get in any other way. It’s an experiment in which I want to get part of my soul back and some peace, both of which were snatched away from me at such an early age”. This production’s premiere in May 2019 was part of the program for the re-inauguration of the Teatro La Memoria venue.

“It’s a representation of the reality we try and forget, even when the headlines are full of it; even when we deal with it every day; even when we are - all of us and always - experiencing it”.
