By Sebastián de la Cuesta
A moving and thoughtful play about ‘human beings’, the passing of time, accepting the passing of the years and the need to empathize with seniors
Es tan lindo saber que usted existe aims to use contemporary dance to yield to, research, create and reflect on ‘being a human’: a subject and body that’s constantly transforming, bringing with it permanent changes and ways of re-adapting to a new existential territory. Created by Sebastián de la Cuesta (Migrante, Playa negra), this piece is a small tribute to the many older people who both feel and are invisible in today’s capitalist society. “We want to suggest a hypothesis about what being a citizen means today and to promote the idea of always putting yourself in someone else’s place - in other words, empathy”, says its director. The play’s cast includes outstanding figures from the national performing arts scene: Paulina Mellado, Francisca Sazié, Rodrigo Pérez, Manuel Peña and Raúl López. Cristián Reyes’ set design includes a multimedia display of projections, sound and lighting. Es tan lindo saber que usted existe was developed at Espacio Checoeslovaquia and was directed by De la Cuesta, with Rodrigo Leal in charge of the play’s lighting.

A place for experimentation
This company was created in 2009 by theater designer Cristian Reyes, director and performer Sebastián de la Cuesta and choreographer and performer Francisca Sazié as a place for experimenting with new styles of theater and dance. As a result, Checoeslovaquia has become somewhere for performing arts to be created, with composer Miguel Miranda and theatrical creator Rodrigo Leal joining it. Together, they’ve put on the plays Sin testear (2009), Zoom (2012), Fractal (2013), Migrante (2016), Playa Negra (2018) and Es tan lindo saber que usted existe (2018).
