Who’s the enemy? How do they become the enemy? What defines them or makes them different? How do we connect with ‘others’? These are some of the challenging questions that a group of Chilean doctors ask themselves as they put the finishing touches to their talk for an international conference on prejudice in medicine. It’s a relevant subject that has becoming increasingly more complex due to the recent arrival of the Amenites, extraterrestrials who have come to settle on earth. Misunderstood, marginalized and feared, these beings provide the perfect opportunity to reflect on hate, love and the implicit violence towards ‘others’. Continuing along the same lines as their previous piece, Donde Viven los Bárbaros, the Bonobo Company once again takes a look at violence towards ‘others’ in democracies. Using humor and irony, the production’s fast-paced and uncomfortable dialogues create an atmosphere of fear, absurdity and discomfort.

Pablo Manzi

Pablo Manzi is an actor, director and playwright. He has spent much of his career with the Bonobo Company, writing and directing Amansadura, Donde viven los bárbaros and Tú amarás, a play partly developed at a residency at the Baryshnikov Art Center in New York. His plays have been performed at different festivals, both in Chile and worldwide. In mid- 2017, he was invited to carry out a residency at the Royal Court Theater in London by the British Council.

Andreina Olivari

Andreina Olivari is an actress, director of the Bonobo Company and teacher, with a degree in Hispanic Language and Literature from the University of Chile. As an actress, she has belonged to different groups and worked with different directors. With the Bonobo company, she has acted in Amansadura and directed Donde viven los bárbaros and Tú Amarás. The plays she has directed have won several awards and taken part in several festivals such as the Cadiz Festival (Spain), the Adelante Festival (Germany), Temporada Alta (Lima) and Santiago a Mil. This year she was invited to take part in the Holland Festival Parels.

Compañía Bonobo

Bonobo is a theater group that was formed in 2012 by Pablo Manzi and Andreina Olivari with the aim of bringing unprecedented works to the stage and giving rise to reflection. To date, they have performed Amansadura (2012), Donde viven los bárbaros (2015) and Tú amarás (2018) to great success, taking part in the Cadiz Festival, Santiago a Mil, Adelante (Germany) and Cielos del Infinito, among others. The script of Donde viven los bárbaros won awards from the Chilean Circle of Art Critics, as well as the Council for Culture and the Municipality of Santiago in 2016.

  • Since its very first production, the Bonobo Company has aimed to question and reflect on contemporary democratic Chilean society. In this new project, they aim to give the audience the chance to find new meaning in and to take another look at a kind of violence that, in their opinion, has become the norm in democratic societies and is expressed through fear of immigrants, those who are different and minorities.

  • Bonobo caught the attention of both audiences and critics alike with their premiere of Donde viven los bárbaros (2015), a play that was hugely successful and which had runs at different Chilean venues. “Like Donde viven los bárbaros, (Tu amarás) is a play in which the script is incredibly important and the acting also plays a main role, since everything occurs in sober surroundings that allow you to see the actors’ bodies”, commented the director in the La Tercera newspaper.

  • Bonobo won the Best Script award from the Chilean Circle of Art Critics for Donde viven los bárbaros, a category they also won the following year at the awards held by the then Council for Culture and the Arts. They also won the award for best play at the Las Condes Theater Festival.

  • Tu amarás is the result of extensive research and work on physical theater, initially at the Espacio Checoslovaquia creative center and then in a two week residency at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York.
  • About medicine. More than a play about the work of doctors, it’s a reflection on people’s relationship with ‘others’. “We thought that prejudice towards ‘others’ could be made visible through medicine. It’s given us ample opportunity to talk about what we’re interested in”, explains Pablo Manzi.
