While studying, rehearsing and acting the classic Shakespeare play King Lear, an old actor tries to leave his trade secrets to his daughter, who is back in the country after nine years. The young actress, however, has new artistic leanings and wants to escape her father’s shadow and go back to France. Extremely intimate and gentle, the play turns full circle, following the stages of senile dementia until the actor’s deterioration makes a logical story impossible. Memories, passages from the play and reality are mixed up in a whirlwind of time and emotion that requires great theatrics: skillful, metaphorical and timeless mechanics fuse and confuse until, during the last performance, the young actress has to decide whether to break the ties with her father forever or give up her acting career to look after someone in the last throes of Alzheimer’s. In this new production, renowned director Jaime Lorca, together with his Viajeinmóvil company, delve into an art for he’s made his owns: object and puppet theater.

Lear is part of Santiago a Mil thanks to an alliance with La Rebelión de los Muñecos and the Teatro a Mil Foundation, in the framework of the festival’s collaborative work model.

Jaime Lorca is an internationally famous actor, playwright and theater director, at the end of the eighties he founded and was part of La Troppa with Laura Pizarro and Juan Carlos Zagal. Their productions include the famous plays Pinocchio, Lobo and Gemelos. He has won the Altazor award twice (in 2000 and 2004) and has toured the world with several of his pieces. His current company is Viajeinmóvil, with which he has explored puppet theater. He is director of the Bellas Artes Amphitheater, the only specialist venue in Chile dedicated to object and puppet theater.

Compañía Viajeinmóvil

Viajeinmóvil is a group of actors, musicians, theater designers, designers, producers and technicians dedicated to the study and creation of theater. Led by Jaime Lorca, the company focuses on creating performing arts shows based on animated theater, touring Chile and the world. Since its creation in 2005, Viajeinmóvil has created seven shows with a common denominator: the use of puppets, object animation and mobile sets. Their artistic research is focused on actors’ relationship with puppets and objects and on the different and infinite theatrical possibilities that this combination offers. Otelo, Chef and Guillever make up part of this company’s outstanding repertoire.

  • Jaime Lorca is one of the main players on the Chilean theater scene. His career spans 25 years and he was part of one of the country’s most legendary and innovative projects: the Teatro La Troppa company, creator of pieces such as Pinocchio and Gemelos. To highlight his contribution and importance, the 2014 version of the Santiago a Mil Festival included a retrospective of his plays.

  • Viajeinmóvil is one of the pioneers in puppet and object theater in Chile. A multidisciplinary group, they’re known for their work with object animation, puppets handled by actors and mobile sets and have produced plays such as Gulliver, El último heredero, Chef, Orates, Benito Cereno and Otelo. In 2011, they opened the first venue specializing in this type of theater – the Bellas Artes Amphitheater.

  • Jaime Lorca, together with Teatroinmóvil, has spent years exploring Shakespeare in different productions. In 2015, he turned Richard III into a contemporary story about bullying in schools and, in 2016, he created his own version of Othello, a piece about which it has been said that Shakespeare was 400 years ahead of his time, since it deals with femicide. “Incorrectly, it’s thought that the classics are boring or tedious or Shakespeare is taken as if it were a museum exhibit that you can only go see and not touch. I think the playwright was the Tarantino of his times and that today he’s more alive than ever", said Lorca in the El Mercurio newspaper.

  • Talking about Rey Lear, Lorca explains that it’s an investigation into the “father-daughter relationship, into the parent’s senile dementia and into tangible and intangible family inheritance”. In the play, Shakespeare “took a look both at who we are and who all those coming before us were”, says the director
  • King Lear. One of William Shakespeare’s most famous plays, this tragedy written in verse and prose was published in 1608. In five acts, it tells the tragedy of Lear, the authoritarian King of Britain, who wants to divide his kingdom between his three daughters according to how much love they love him. The play deals with daughterly love and ungratefulness, based on the relationship between the monarch and Cordelia, his youngest daughter. As opposed to her sisters, she avoids flattering her father and tells him that she loves him “as much as she should”, causing Lear to fly into a rage. The play has been performed in many different formats, including theater, opera, film and radio-theater. An interesting fact is that Lear, rey & mendigo by Nicanor Parra is considered the best Spanish translation of this play.

  • La Rebelión de los Muñecos (Chile). As part of their aim to create more opportunities and give animated and puppet theater a place in Chile, Viajeinmóvil hold the La Rebelión de los Muñecos International Festival, with a program that includes outstanding animated and puppet theater productions. Once a year, they bring together Chilean and foreign companies, with the aim of becoming a national and international platform that spreads, promotes, trains, tours and perfects these specializations. La Rebelión de los Muñecos has an important task: to make material theater visible country-wide; to make its program more international and to offer, at the same time, the opportunity to study under world-renowned experts.
