Calderón once again emerges as one of the most interesting voices on the Uruguayan scene

Brecha Magazine, Uruguay

A grandfather dies and his family face new and ever differing challenges when trying to give him a decent burial. His money, his ideas, his beliefs. Power, inheritance and tradition. Survivors - anyone who brings themself to walk and live on an earth that has buried millions of dead from previous generations - carry the weight of death, inheriting unsolved mistakes and problems. They are the historical cumulation of everything that is positive and negative. We’ve built a home for ourselves using the inheritance of our dead grandparents, great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents and we live there, ignoring the horror that built these walls. Life is celebrated, even though it’s nothing more than a slow and inevitable journey towards what built them. We think we’ve cheated death, but what if we’ve been cheated or we’ve cheated ourselves? In that case, we’re simply celebrating lies.

IF – Festejan la mentira is the new play by Gabriel Calderón, one of Uruguay’s most consistent and interesting playwrights and directors.

  • IF – Festejan la mentira tackles a universal subject: how the death of a loved one causes arguments, jealousy and fighting within a family. Money, lies and inheritance are the play’s main topics. As Calderón explains, the play is about what we get from the dead and what their legacy to us is. “(It’s about) money and what we do with it; basically, the link between art and money, beliefs, family, the lie we live and what we think is truth and what is a lie”, he says.

  • Gabriel Calderón returns to Santiago a Mil after his 2015 presentation of Ex - que revienten los actores, a production described by El País as “a singular hybrid of political tragicomedy and science-fiction, set against the backdrop of the Uruguayan dictatorship”, and his play Uz, el pueblo, both part of the Pentalogía fantástica series. Calderón was also invited to take part in the XVI Chilean National Playwriting Exhibition.

  • Uruguayan critics highlighted how the actors were directed, “giving them free reign for performances full of energy and lunacy, with long, explosive, well-written monologues”, according to critic Carlos Reyes.

  • Gabriel Calderón is one of the key names in Uruguayan theater. His plays have been performed in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Spain, France and the United States. His scripts have been translated into French, German, English, Greek and Portuguese. His plays have been performed numerous times at several international theater festivals in America and Europe.
  • Pentalogía fantástica. IF – Festejan la mentira is the fourth in a five-part series by Gabriel Calderón, preceded by the plays Ex, que revienten los actores (2012); Or, tal vez la vida sea ridícula (2010) and Uz, el pueblo, (2015). Their common denominator is explained in Brecha, a Uruguayan magazine, as “the sudden emergence of a surprising and fantastic element in a story that is always full of caustic humor and a way of acting that takes the protagonists to unexpected extremes”.

«It’s nothing out of the ordinary to heap praise on one of Gabriel Calderón’s productions, but IF - Festejan la mentira is perhaps one of the best international pieces to be brought to the stage by the Uruguayan playwright and theater director»

TVShow, Uruguay

«The verbosity of the characters create a dizzying rhythm that underscores the script’s irony»
